UPA is a public charter middle school for sixth - eighth graders designed to make students excited to show up, dive into projects and discover their capabilities.
“We want our students to see that learning beyond the classroom; it’s an experience that will prepare them as leaders for today and the future,” said Shonqualla West-County, Executive Director and Lead Founder. “By the time they leave UPA, they will not only know concepts; they will know how to apply them in the real world.”
A place where students love to learn
Before UPA, West-County was a scientist that turned into a dedicated educator frustrated with the public school system. She spent years watching students fall through the cracks they didn’t create. She saw potential that was not nurtured, brilliance that was not named, and systems that were not built for every child.
“I was tired of seeing students go through school unprepared for life,” West-County said. “I wanted a place where they could explore their interests, gain confidence, and learn real skills; not just memorize facts. I wanted a school where kids want to be.”
The turning point came during the pandemic. West-County received a call that changed everything: an invitation to join the National Building Excellent Schools Fellowship. She became the first leader from the Austin region and one of the youngest nationwide to earn this distinction. This moment was more than just an opportunity; it was a mandate to start her own school. A chance to build a school families had been asking for but could not find.

Learning for real-world success
At UPA, textbooks are only the starting point. Students learn by doing because the world rewards action, creativity, and leadership. At UPA students explore, create, and lead through three core pillars:
- Career exploration
- Design thinking
- Leadership development
“Our students are so engaged in learning that it doesn’t feel like school,” West-County said. “They are excited to be here, and many don’t want to go home.”
A school that wraps families in support
At UPA’s mission extends beyond academics. Students are supported as whole people; not just learners. As a community school, it wraps families in resources, enrichment opportunities and personalized support so every child feels known, encouraged and equipped to succeed.
Outside the classroom, students can pursue their passions through clubs like K-pop, STEM and art. Sports like volleyball, basketball, and football help them build teamwork, confidence and healthy habits.
UPA is a place where students feel inspired to explore their passions and excited to learn.

Where potential becomes purpose
Research shows that middle school is the age when many kids lose confidence. Middle school is a defining chapter in a child’s life; a time when curiosity grows, confidence forms and new possibilities emerge. At UPA, those years are about discovering strengths, developing leadership, and building lasting real-world skills.
Here, students learn by doing. They explore careers early, tackle meaningful projects, lead teams, build relationships with mentors and experience relevant, challenging and empowering learning. With wraparound support and a caring school community, they learn to believe in themselves.
“Middle school shouldn’t dim a student’s curiosity; it should ignite it,” West-County said.
