In San Antonio, families looking for a welcoming school with a unique education model find a match at Eleanor Kolitz Hebrew Language Academy.

This tuition-free public charter school serves kindergarten through eighth grade. It offers a combination of small class sizes and a rich innovative curriculum, led by passionate teachers who provide extraordinary student support.

What makes EKHLA different?

EKHLA emphasizes personal attention. With fewer than 500 students, teachers are able to build deep relationships with learners and teach with greater depth of knowledge rather than broad, surface-level instruction.

“Every student learns differently. Every student has different needs, and our teachers practice to teach to the highest level of their abilities, inspiring students to thrive,” said Gabriela Tawil, District Coordinator of Marketing & Development, Fundraising and Enrichment.

Beyond academics, the school’s core values are woven throughout campus life. Whether it’s beautifying the new K-2 playground, daily social emotional lessons, participating in community events, students are encouraged to explore curiosity, responsibility and care for others.

How does Hebrew language learning fit into the day?

Each day, students take a 45-minute Hebrew language and Israeli culture class. While Hebrew is new to many incoming students, lessons are designed to be approachable and visual, starting with simple greetings and expanding to vocabulary and sentence building.

Tawil noted that families don’t need prior experience for their children to succeed.

Learning a second language at an early age offers significant cognitive benefits, such as improved problem-solving, creativity and a "brain boost" that can lead to better academic performance. The Hebrew lessons are scaled by level, so long-time students may take advanced Hebrew, while new students are placed in Hebrew I.

What does the community look like at EKHLA?

The school has a strong sense of community, supported by an active and thriving PTO and numerous school-led events. Yearly events like backyard grade level playdates, Health Fair, Spirit Nights, Fun Run, Talent Show, Middle School Dance, field day and bike rodeo contribute to EKHLA’s family oriented community.

EKHLA also offers a robust athletics department beginning in fourth grade. Competitive sports include:
  • Basketball
  • Soccer
  • Volleyball
Enrichment clinics such as Ultimate Hoops, Futsal, Chess, Crochet, Icode, Science Guys, Tennis Club and Transitional Breathing Awareness, or TAB, classes are also available after school.

Additionally, after-school care is provided daily until 6 p.m.

How does EKHLA prepare students for high school and beyond?

EKHLA blends academic rigor with practical readiness. Students have the opportunity to earn high school credits in Algebra, Hebrew, and the school’s Methodology of Academic and Professional Success course, which equips them with strong study habits, organizational strategies and college-readiness skills.

To further support rising eighth graders, the school hosts a High School Readiness Fair that brings together representatives from local campuses across the community.

Organization is emphasized at every grade level. Each student receives an agenda and is expected to record exam dates, assignments, lessons and more—building independence and responsibility from an early age.

Upcoming open houses

While EKHLA offers adult-only tours every Friday at 9 a.m., its open houses are designed specifically for families and children to experience the campus.

The Saturday events include a jump house, coffee, and the opportunity for students to walk the halls and learn about after-school programs—an important step for children transitioning to a new school environment.

EKHLA will host two open houses:
  • December 6 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m.
  • February 7, 2026 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m.
Teachers, administrators, athletics and enrichment staff will be available to answer questions.

Does EKHLA have enrollment open?

Yes. Open enrollment for new families for the 2026-27 school year runs February 1-28, with a lottery determining placement. The school also accepts applications throughout the school year for those wanting to join immediately.

“We aren’t only accepting applications for next year, but currently have seats available for the current school year,” Tawil said.
