For 35 years, the Denco Area 9-1-1 District has been the unseen hero connecting Denton County residents to lifesaving help.

What began as a community-driven initiative in the late 1980s has grown into one of Texas’ most advanced and trusted emergency communications systems: a network built on innovation, service and heart.

“Denco’s mission is to provide an efficient and reliable enhanced 9-1-1 telecommunications system that connects people to the help they need when they need it most,” education services manager Marissa Lewis said.

The history

Before 9-1-1 existed in Denton County, emergency calls often meant confusion and delays.

In 1987, residents voted to create a dedicated emergency communications district—a decision that would shape the region’s future.

“In August 1987, Denton County residents made their voices heard, with an overwhelming 81% voting in favor of creating a dedicated emergency communications district,” Lewis said. “With that vote, the Denco Area 9-1-1 District was born.”

After three years of planning and infrastructure development, Denco officially launched 9-1-1 services on August 8, 1990. This marked the beginning of a legacy defined by forward-thinking, leadership and community trust.

How does technology power Denco Area 9-1-1’s life-saving work?

Over the decades, Denco Area 9-1-1 has evolved alongside major telecommunications shifts, from landlines to smartphones and from voice-only calls to real-time video and text.

The organization has consistently led the state in emergency communication technology. It has implemented first-in-Texas advancements, such as digital 9-1-1 call routing, early text-to-911 and video-to-911 capabilities.

“These advances, along with redundant telecommunications networks, 24/7 support, real-time translation, geospatial routing and indoor mapping, demonstrate Denco Area 9-1-1’s continued commitment to cutting-edge emergency response,” Lewis said.

Each innovation supports a single goal: connecting people to help faster, with greater precision and reliability.

When seconds count, technology and teamwork come together to save lives.

An example of a life saved

Behind every system and signal is a human story of courage, compassion and quick thinking.

Lewis shared one that embodies Denco Area 9-1-1’s mission: a man who survived cardiac arrest after his wife called 9-1-1 and was guided through CPR by a dispatcher.

“Stories like this are at the heart of the Denco mission,” Lewis said. “Every effort, program and innovation is focused on one goal: connecting people to the help they need when it matters most, and turning critical seconds into lives saved.”

Denco Area 9-1-1 also works to educate the community on how and when to call 9-1-1, through extensive public outreach.

The team participates in school programs, community events and focused media campaigns, reaching tens of thousands of people each year.

Their initiatives, including distributing safety materials to more than 50,000 elementary students, strengthen community confidence and readiness in emergencies.

Looking ahead

As Denco Area 9-1-1 celebrates its 35th anniversary, its mission remains as vital as ever.

The organization continues to lead with innovation, enhance public engagement and empower the professionals who answer every call with calm expertise and compassion.

From its founding vote in 1987 to its role today as a statewide leader, Denco Area 9-1-1 stands as a testament to what’s possible when a community comes together to prioritize safety, connection and progress.
