Real stories, real savings: How UFCU members rebuild their lives through refinancing

A few years ago, one UFCU member was facing homelessness. Today, thanks to a refinance, their financial footing looks completely different.

By cutting total interest from $2,700 to $900, they not only saved money, but also regained stability.

“Where can you do that? You can do that at UFCU,” said Margot Harmatuk, manager of UFCU’s Kelly Lane branch.

Harmatuk said stories like these are reminders of why she and her team come to work every day: to help people rebuild, reimagine and thrive.

Community involvement

UFCU’s leaders and loan officers live, work and volunteer in the same communities they serve.

Together, Harmatuk and senior retail manager Joe Adair participate in nearly ten community organizations.

This has played a significant role in the credit union ’s success. Residents have voted both the Pflugerville and Kelly Lane branches Best of Pflugerville for two consecutive years. Those two locations have welcomed more than 3,200 new members in the past year; a clear reflection of the trust and care UFCU has earned across Central Texas.

Oftentimes, that trust starts with listening.

“We’re going to ask you what your goals are. ... We want to hear your story,” Harmatuk said. “Then we’re going to [work] together, and you’ll lead, to build your plan.”

What refinancing programs are available?

You don’t have to be a UFCU member to explore refinancing options. Anyone can apply for membership to take advantage of lower rates, reduced payments and long-term savings through UFCU’s auto refinancing programs.¹

Some see monthly savings of more than $100, and others have seen savings of up to $1,800 per month.

“It is so rewarding when [we tell people], ‘You’re approved,’” Harmatuk said.

November thru January, UFCU is offering a 0% annual percentage rate for 90 days on external loans refinanced through the credit union.²

Adair said the timing surrounding the holidays is intentional.

“We try to connect the promos to life events, so members can take advantage of them,” he said.

Empowering through education and access

Beyond rates and refinancing, UFCU aims to help people make confident, informed financial decisions. The credit union’s DRIVE program guides buyers through every step of purchasing a car, from budgeting tools to understanding dealership negotiations.

“An informed member is a confident member,” Adair said.

UFCU also recognizes that not every borrower’s situation looks the same. People can apply for loans remotely through a self-serve online application, and bilingual loan officers can assist Spanish-speaking applicants.

UFCU provides services in Spanish to ensure more people have access to fair, transparent lending.

The team also partners with Inszone Insurance to help interested members who are uninsured find affordable coverage.

“We have members coming in who drove here without insurance,” Harmatuk said. “ They can be covered by the time they walk out the door if that’s what they need.”

UFCU employees work with their members beyond the transactional level.

“We believe refinancing isn’t just about numbers—it’s about restoring hope and possibility,” said Janice Matthews, AVP of Retail & Lending Experience. “When a member reduces their interest burden and gains breathing room, that relief ripples through their life: more flexibility, less stress, clearer goals. We’re proud to offer programs that don’t simply rearrange debt, but help to rebuild lives.”

Join UFCU today and discover a better way to drive your dreams. With great rates, local service and programs designed for your success, you can move forward with confidence.
