3 ways in-office surgery benefits patients, plus a familiar face returns

3 ways in-office surgery benefits patients, plus a familiar face returns

At Georgetown Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, comprehensive care goes beyond cleanings and checkups.

The practice offers in-office oral and maxillofacial surgery, or OMS.

Here’s everything you need to know about the benefits of this service.

1. Procedures happen in a known environment, which can reduce patient stress.

One of the greatest advantages of in-office OMS is the sense of comfort and convenience it can provide.

“Providing the care in an environment which is familiar to the patients helps to alleviate some of the anxiety of going to an unfamiliar office with staff that perhaps they have not met previously,” GPDO provider Dr. Kevin E. Lew said.

Additionally, when a child requires sedation for both dental and surgical treatments, the procedures can possibly be coordinated in a single visit. This reduces the need for multiple appointments and helps patients feel more at ease throughout their care.

2. Collaborative care.

Increasing the amount of services within the office strengthens communication between providers, allowing for seamless coordination when patients need more advanced care. With access to patient records and direct communication, the team can tailor each procedure to the child’s unique needs.

“Staff and primary doctors familiar with the patient and their dental history allow fluid communication of any historical or ongoing issues,” Dr. Lew said. “It allows us to adapt to the needs of this particular patient in providing oral surgery and anesthesia care.”

This collaboration also means the team can quickly consult with families and determine whether immediate treatment or a more conservative approach is best.

3. Families can trust that their child is in great hands.

The benefit for families is clear: consistent care from a team they know and trust.

The same familiar faces who have guided children through their routine checkups and cleanings treat them, helping build confidence even in more complex situations.

“The nature of the relationship that [GPDO] Drs. Havard, Hildebrand and Jacob have developed with their patients provides some reassurance to families that when their children need to have more invasive or extensive surgery, they will be taken care of as they always have been,” Dr. Lew said.

A meaningful return for Dr. Jacob

This year marked the return of GPDO provider Dr. Lisa Jacob to the team. For her, it’s both a professional milestone and a personal homecoming.

She said rejoining GPDO felt like returning to family after spending time away, gaining additional experience.

“My return to Georgetown Pediatric Dentistry was driven by a strong connection to the team, the families we serve and the shared commitment to exceptional pediatric care,” Dr. Jacob said. “During my time away, I gained valuable experience that deepened my passion for this work and reaffirmed how special this practice is.”

Now, Dr. Jacob is focused on advancing the patient experience through team mentorship, community outreach and the use of innovations designed to make dentistry more comfortable for children.

“One area I’m especially interested in is bringing in new techniques and tools that enhance patient comfort, like the newer methods for delivering local anesthesia painlessly,” Dr. Jacob said. “Innovations like that can really transform a child’s experience at the dentist and help build lifelong trust.”

Her familiarity with the team and families helps her seamlessly step back into the role.

“There’s already a sense of trust and comfort with the families, which makes it easier to connect and provide care that feels more personal,” Dr. Jacob said. “I’m not just getting to know patients; I’m reconnecting with them.”

A practice that grows with its patients

With a focus on patient care and in-house surgical services, GPDO continues to evolve while staying true to its family-centered mission.

For Drs. Jacob and Lew, these developments reflect a shared commitment to making dental care easier and more compassionate for local families.

“It’s ... great to be back with a team I know and respect,” Dr. Jacob said. “That familiarity makes communication smoother and teamwork stronger, which ultimately benefits everyone, especially the kids.”
