“We call it FACETS instead of activities because we want to hit on all the facets of our residents' lives,” Director of FACETS Sherri Wells said.
The team at Grand Living focuses on five key areas: health and wellness, spiritual growth, social interaction, legacy, and lifelong learning. Wells said the team tries to highlight each facet with 12 to 15 daily activities.
To promote social well-being, the community hosts weekly happy hours with live music, a resident choir, monthly bingo tournaments, veterans support groups, coffee hours, group outings for lunch and shopping, and more.
Twice a year, Grand Living at Georgetown hosts a music festival modeled after Austin City Limits called Georgetown City Limits. The community brings in local musicians and vendors for an all-day festival.
For spiritual wellness, Grand Living at Georgetown brings a local church to the community to host weekly Bible studies, as well as provides transportation to churches in the area.
To promote lifelong learning, the community partners with Southwestern University and invites professors to teach classes on topics that interest the residents. Wells said some residents are currently participating in weekly Spanish classes.
Wells helps residents think about the legacy they will leave behind by helping them learn about their family history through genealogy. The community also promotes intergenerational activities, such as Grandparents Day Karaoke, where residents can invite their grandchildren to spend time with them doing a shared activity.
Grand Living at Georgetown also has a Director of Fitness who plans exercise activities to increase strength, endurance and flexibility.
One thing that makes Grand Living at Georgetown unique is the way the staff encourages resident participation in planning events. Residents are encouraged to suggest outings, events or new activities through a suggestion box, and these ideas are promptly added to the calendar.
“We have a suggestion box, and I tell them, ‘If there's a movie you want to see, if there's any place that you want to go, or a place you want to eat, just put it in the suggestion box and we'll get it on the calendar,’” Wells said. “I always try to make sure that that is on the calendar at least by the next month so that they know that their suggestions really do mean something and we will try to get those done.”
