Schertz City Council on Feb. 15 held a Schertz City Council On the Go meeting at St. John Paul II Catholic High School.

This event allowed the community to meet with City Council and other departments and allow the city to get feedback while updating residents on current and future projects.

Assistant City Manager Brian James spoke on the additional trails, and parks and recreation developments that the city has worked on.

One of these developments is the Great Northern Trail which runs from FM 1518 up I-35 and to the Cypress Point Neighborhood off Eckhardt Road.

“One of the things we heard from residents is we don’t really have enough trails up in the northern part of the community,” James said.

Alongside this trail project, the city is also working with other local municipalities on the Cibolo Creek Recreational Trail, which will run along Cibolo Creek throughout the area.

Finance Director James Walter presented a budget recap that included a breakdown of funds from the American Rescue Plan Act.

“Schertz is scheduled to receive $10.4 million,” Walters said. “We have already received the first half and later this year, we will receive the other $5.2 million.”

These funds will be used for public health expenditures, economic changes, replacing lost public sector revenue, investing in city infrastructure and covering more costs that were related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

City Manager Mark Browne recapped some of the accomplishments the city made in 2021, including the COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic initiative that administered 35,191 vaccine doses.

Browne also mentioned Fire Station No. 4 planned to be placed around the FM 3009 area and will be funded through a $15.45 million bond voters approved in November.

Browne complimented city staff for their hard work over the last year and said he looks forward to the consistent growth the city is facing while taking into account community feedback through community satisfaction surveys.

“We know we have work to do,” Browne said. “We take that seriously and use data to help us understand what our residents are most interested in.”
