State Rep. Ina Minjarez and former District Judge Peter Sakai were the top vote-getters in a four-candidate Democratic primary for Bexar County judge March 1, according to early evening election returns.

Former County Commissioner Trish DeBerry, meanwhile, was easily beating a fellow Republican in the GOP primary for Bexar County judge, according to election numbers.

As of 10:30 p.m., Sakai had 42.1% of early and election day votes in the Democratic primary. Minjarez, who represents District 124 in the Texas Legislature, had 30.3%.

Ivalis Meza Gonzalez—San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg’s former chief of staff—was running third with 18.6%. Gerard Ponce, who previously ran for various local public offices, including mayor in 2015 and 2017, had 8.8%.

DeBerry, a former business owner who represented county Precinct 3 on the north side, was leading the Republican primary with 64.6% of the vote over former sheriff’s deputy Nathan Buchanan.

The overall Democratic and GOP primary winners advance to the Nov. 8 general election with a bid to succeed Democrat Nelson Wolff, who is retiring as county judge.
