Connections is a nonprofit organization that supports at-risk youth in Comal County. Officials celebrated the project’s completion with a ribbon-cutting Oct. 9.
The overview
The $8 million expansion project was constructed in two phases. The first phase, completed in September 2024, encompasses the nonprofit’s emergency shelter for children ages 5-17 and a transitional living program for older teens and young adults getting ready to exit foster care, according to previous reporting by Community Impact.
The residential facility provides emergency housing for foster youth and homeless youth. The transitional living program also provides housing for children between the ages of 15 and 23 years old, as previously reported by Community Impact.
The second phase consists of offices for staff, a counseling center with dedicated play therapy, sand tray therapy, family rooms and a community room. The community can accommodate up to 60 people and is available for other local, nonprofit groups, according to a news release.
Notable quote
Chief Executive Officer Jacob Huereca said the celebration was surreal.
"It still doesn't feel quite real yet, but to see the amount of people that showed up today—it's very heartwarming and really amazing," Huereca told Community Impact.
