The city of Plano on Jan. 28 approved a three-year agreement to make Mark Israelson its next city manager.

Israelson, the city’s senior deputy city manager, will step into the city’s top executive role May 1 after City Manager Bruce Glasscock leaves the position. Israelson's contract with the city runs through April 30, 2022.

“I am truly honored and humbled to be selected by the City Council to lead this organization and be a part of the community I grew up in,” Israelson said in a city news release. “I look forward to working with the Mayor, Council and staff to address the needs of the community and keep Plano the City of Excellence."

The city first hired Israelson in 1999 as a budget analyst and later tapped him to serve in a variety of roles, including director of customer and utility services and director of policy and government relations, according to the city website. Israelson also has chief executive experience with the city of Kilgore, where he served on loan as interim city manager in 2015.

As Plano's senior deputy city manager, Israelson was responsible for overseeing various city departments, including Plano Fire-Rescue, animal services, the library system, tourism, emergency management, environmental health, and police and public safety communications.

“The Council and I are excited about what is to come,” Mayor Harry LaRosiliere said in the release. “Mark combines innovative thinking with a genuine understanding of Plano's culture of excellence. Those qualities makes him uniquely qualified to usher us into future.”

Israelson will earn a base salary of $255,000 per year, according to the agreement.
