Roadwork to keep portion of Loop 202-Santan Freeway closed for weekend

Gilbert drivers who use the Loop 202-Santan Freeway should make alternative route plans for the weekend because of roadwork, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

A 10-mile stretch of the freeway from Williams Field Road to US 60 will be closed in both directions.

The closure begins at 10 p.m. May 3. ADOT has scheduled the road to reopen at 3 a.m. May 6.

Crews will be treating the road with an asphalt-based sealant to extend the road’s life and repairing damaged pavement from the wet winter and heavy traffic, according to ADOT.

The “fog seal” treatment will involve tanker trucks spraying an asphalt-based emulsion on the pavement, according to ADOT. Crews will reopen the freeway in segments after the emulsion dries and other pavement repairs are completed.

Similar roadwork will close the Loop 202-Santan Freeway from the Loop 101 to Williams Field Road on May 10-13.
