Gilbert is asking residents to only put four types of items into recycling bins for collection: plastic bottles, jugs and jars; metal food and beverage containers; paper; and flattened cardboard.
The original plan did not include paper, but the town has added it to the program so long as it is not soiled, shredded, metallic, waxed or tissue.
Cardboard cannot be greasy or stained, and any packing materials must be removed. Metal food and beverage containers are limited to tin, aluminum and steel.
The items included are the only ones considered to have value in the recycling market. The town’s goal is for compliance by September.
Notably excluded from recycling are glass and certain plastics.
