Gov. Doug Ducey issued further guidance May 1 for retail stores planning to begin reopening next week. The guidance is divided between customers and the businesses.

Under Ducey's extension of the "Stay home, stay healthy, stay connected" directive, retail could begin reopening May 4 for delivery and curbside pickup services and May 8 for limited in-store service.

Case count

The six ZIP codes that serve Gilbert have had 190 cases of COVID-19, a one-day increase of seven, according to data from the Arizona Department of Health Services on May 1.

Health Services reported 7,962 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Arizona on May 1, an increase of 314 from the previous day. Additionally, the number of deaths is now 330, up 10 from the previous day.

Maricopa County has 4,156 confirmed cases as of May 1, an increase of 205 cases, and 152 deaths, an increase of seven.

Gilbert Mayor Jenn Daniels reacted to the recent surges in town numbers in her video message for April 30.

“We do expect to see spikes in these numbers, mostly because we’re just ramping up testing,” she said.

Daniels said the town is working on having testing sites in Gilbert.
