Karen McCoy credits her grandparents for growing up respecting nature and enjoying watching things grow.

“Even as a child, I was outside picking weeds and eating them and tasting them and looking at my mother be like, ‘spit that out,’” McCoy said with a laugh. “It’s been a very comfortable journey. I just always felt like right on track. I still do. I’m at peace with who I am and what I do.”

What she does is more than just being the owner of Take Your Vitamins!—the store’s tagline is “Make Your Mother Happy”—but work to help others in their own health and life journey. McCoy said she is still learning along with those she serves.

“I'm so blessed by my customers,” she said. “I adore them, and they're not just customers to me. They’re so so much more. And we care about each other. It's a really beautiful community that's been created, and they trust me—and that's a big burden to carry.”

McCoy’s journey started growing up in New Jersey. She said she ran a lot of businesses from a young age.

“I worked with the public a lot,” she said. “I love people, am used to working horrific hours, like seven days a week. So I love to be active. I need my mind to be active. I love to teach. I love to just be of service to people in need.”

That led her to getting a degree in nursing, something she said that had credentials and she always could fall back on. But she only was a registered nurse for a short while.

“With the caring end of my nature, it just seemed like a perfect fit,” she said. “[But] it was not for me. I couldn't teach what I was there to teach really, nutrition.”

After moving to Arizona, she got a job in a health food store that she loved, but eventually she needed a bigger challenge. That’s how “Take Your Vitamins!” came to be.

Her nursing credential helps her get access to high-quality vitamins at a discounted price. And she continues to learn.

“I love to read,” she said. “I'm hungry for knowledge. I still am. If I don't know something, we [McCoy and the customer] look it up together, and we both learn.”
