The board unanimously approved a $4.44 million price tag on the land plus title policy and closing costs at its Aug. 14 meeting. The land is located at the northeast corner of Ocotillo Road and 148th Street in Gilbert, in what is known as the Val Vista Corridor. The Val Vista Corridor is the area of the district anticipating the most growth in the coming years as new housing developments are built, the district's Chief Financial Officer Lana Berry said during the meeting.
"We are almost at capacity at Haley Elementary School, Patterson Elementary School and Weinberg Elementary School," Berry said. "To start accommodating for those [students], we need to have space. So the new school would open in July 2020."
Berry also noted students currently enrolled at Weinberg would move to this new school—which will have the capacity for about 1,000 students—and the current Weinberg school would become a gifted academy for district students.
The land will be purchased with funds from a 2015 school bond, according to district documents. If the land-acquisition process goes as planned, the district is looking to break ground on the school in November.
