The Chandler USD school board approved the district's 2019-20 budget July 10, which includes a lower tax rate and an increase in teacher salaries.

The secondary tax rate went down from the previous fiscal year by $.0318, CUSD Chief Financial Officer Lana Berry said, and the primary tax rate decreased by $.1804, bringing the district's overall tax rate to $6.4527.

Gilbert Public Schools is the only neighboring East Valley school district with a lower tax rate, Berry said. Gilbert's rate is $5.9951.

Berry's presentation to the board also highlighted a 5% increase in teacher salaries for all teachers employed in 2020. The average salary for teachers in 2020 will be $61,731, up from $59,072 in 2019.

Berry said the district's actual maintenance and operations and capital increased from the 2018-19 revised budget to the 2019-20 proposed budget by $22.9 million.

The budget was approved unanimously following a 30-minute public hearing where Berry went over the details of the budget. There was little discussion from board members before the vote, which member David Evans pointed out was due to a monthslong process of working through the budget.

"We've been through so many pieces of it that I don't want to be flippant in not asking any questions, but ... [Berry has] educated us so well that I don't have any remaining questions," Evans said.
