This story will be updated daily as the Arizona Department of Health Services releases updates.

Across Chandler's six ZIP codes, there are 472 confirmed COVID-19 cases as of May 20: 85224 has 184 cases, 85225 has 112 cases, 85226 has 28 cases, 85248 has 54 cases, 85249 has 50 cases, 85286 has 44 cases. The total is one more than the previous day. Maricopa County reported 7,552 cases total May 20.

“ZIP code counts include anyone in that zip code who has tested positive, whether their infection occurred two months ago and has resolved or two weeks ago and is still active,” Health Services Director Dr. Cara Christ wrote in her blog. “Thus, while ZIP code data is informative, it should not be used to determine whether or not residents of a particular zip code are or are not at risk of COVID-19.”

Maricopa County Public Health officials issued a warning about the ZIP code data April 15.

"While it may be tempting to look for “hot spots” or jump to other conclusions based on this data, Public Health wants residents to be aware of the limitations of this data," officials said in a news release. "Whether you see 5 cases or 50 cases in your zip code, we know that COVID-19 is circulating throughout the county, and you need to take the same precautions to prevent illness: stay home as much as you can, stay 6 feet away from others outside your home, and wash your hands routinely."

Officials warned that the data only those who have tested positive while testing capabilities remain limited and some people with the virus are asymptomatic and thus are never tested.
