As store manager of Sweet Daddy Cupcakes, Forlasto said taste alone is not enough to make the baked treat shine. Under Forlasto’s standards, a good cupcake is delicious, fresh and visually stunning.

“Everything in our store is freshly baked and decorated,” she said. “If you look in our case, you’ll see that each cupcake is just a bit different from each other.”

Sweet Daddy Cupcakes has been open for nine years and came under new ownership four years ago. Forlasto has been a store manager since new ownership took over. The bakery is now a “sister store” to Toasted Mallow in Gilbert, owned by Tricia Arce. The cupcake shop has seen both community and national recognition. The shop was featured on an episode of “Cupcake Wars” on Food Network.

“Customers will come into our shop and see what we have to offer, and we can see the ‘wow’ all over their faces,” Forlasto said.

She said social media has also provided a platform to display the cupcake designs. The store’s Instagram page has more than 2,000 followers and more than a thousand posts. ••Sweet Daddy Cupcakes is open for walk-in purchases but also provides special orders and event coverage as well. While COVID-19 caused event coverage to slow down, Forlasto said she is happy to see orders for weddings and other gatherings picking up again.

“Since COVID[-19] happened, so many cupcake places have closed,” she said. “Because of that we’ve become the go-to place for sweets in the area.”

The store also serves other baked goods and beverages. Cupcake flavors include classics such as red velvet and carrot cake, but there are also flavors such as chocolate cheesecake and Loco Coco.

“Our goal is to make people happy,” she said. “If you’re dying for a chocolate and strawberry, I’ll make that happen.”
