For many, coffee is the fuel behind their mornings and long work days. But for Sagebrush Coffee co-owner Matt Kellso, the beverage goes beyond an average caffeine buzz.

Sagebrush Coffee, which opened as an in-person shop in 2021, offers drinks brewed in the shop and supplies for brewing at home. Specialty lattes are named after The Muppets, a group of puppet characters from “The Muppet Show.” These lattes adorn the menu along with baked goods, tea, and other beverages. The product of a habit-turned-passion, Kellso said Sagebrush Coffee has experienced extreme growth over the last few years.

Kellso’s coffee habit started with sneaking coffee beans from the pantry as a child, then accelerated when he entered adulthood. The tipping point was a “coffee crawl” he attended with his wife, Jenna.

“The coffee we had on that trip was so much better than what was available in the Valley at the time,” Kellso said. “That was when I started to roast it on my own.”

Kellso initially gave his home-brewed creations to friends and family. He then took the positive feedback and turned it into Sagebrush Coffee’s first business venture, an online shop. With the support of his family, Kellso grew Sagebrush Coffee, which was first based out of the family garage, into the physical coffee shop it is today.

Kellso said the support from his family was paramount in his decision to quit his full-time job and operate Sagebrush Coffee.

“This is like my dream life,” he said. “My oldest [child] was 10 when we started; he made our first logo.”

Kellso’s passion for supporting family business goes beyond his own doors. When sourcing farms, Kellso’s ideal farm to partner with is one that not only produces the highest-quality coffee plants possible, but also upholds a family-centric approach.

“Our goal is to find those more niche family coffee farms and highlight what they’re doing,” Kellso said.

Sagebrush Coffee sources its coffee from approximately 20 farms, Kellso said. Coffee origins include countries such as Ethiopia, Honduras and Panama.

Quality has always been crucial for Kellso, even to the point of bringing an extra suitcase on vacations to brew his own coffee while away from home. Regular coffee has been “ruined” for his family, and Kellso said his high standards translate into the high quality products found at Sagebrush Coffee.

“We want to showcase the taste of the coffee, and a lot of time has gone into perfecting that,” he said. “When it comes to coffee, you should drink what you love.”
