Michael Garcia wanted to help people have easier access to eye exams after working as an optician for 25 years. He knew a business on the East Coast had found a way to mobilize eye exams and sought out to do that in Arizona about three years ago.

In September 2019, he opened Sight on Site—a mobile eye exam company that brings the quality of an in-office eye exam to workplaces across the East Valley.

“Putting off an eye exam is easy to do,” Garcia said. “People so much these days are busy, busy, busy, and the last thing on their list is getting their eyes checked. It’s an unfortunate thing because it’s so important to see your best—not just for your vision but for your overall eye health.”

Garcia and his team go to businesses in the company van and turn a conference room or meeting space into an optometrist office. They offer eye exams, contacts and glasses, he said. The business also grew in March 2020 to include a brick-and-mortar store where people can come in by appointment to be seen.

“When you do it while you are at work, there is no difference in care,” Garcia said. “We don’t cut corners; we just come to you at work, and you get the same level of care at your office as you would our office.”

In doing mobile eye exams, Garcia said they have found that many people neglect their eye health.

“We have found that not only are there some people that have never had eye exams, but that they haven’t done it because they don’t know where to start,” Garcia said. “We have seen a lot of people who needed glasses that didn’t know they needed glasses.”

Garcia said it poses a win-win for both the employee and the employer who brings in Sight on Site. He said he hopes to get more employers involved in the near future.

“The employee gets to do it on work time, and for the employer it cuts down on what could have been a several-hour event out of the office for the employee,” Garcia said. “When we are there we can do everything in 45 minutes.”
