Modern Allo opened July 27 in Chandler. The business is a coffee, self-care and child care one-stop shop. With a workspace, a conference room and a supervised area for child care, the business boasts a place for parents to have a chance to get work done while children are being cared for.
Sweeties Candy brings generations together with sweet treats
Mike Manzo started working at Sweeties Candy back in Cleveland as a kid. The shop was family-owned, and Tom, who ran the old-fashioned candy emporium, would go on to become Manzo’s father-in-law.
Manzo married Tom’s daughter, and the couple decided after a rough Ohio winter to move to Arizona. They started Sweeties Candy in Chandler.
West Alley BBQ & Smokehouse blends Southern tastes and hospitality
Christian Brantley said his family started West Alley BBQ & Smokehouse in Chandler on a whim.
The family had come to Arizona from Jackson, Tennessee—where they began the first West Alley BBQ location—to visit a family member when they heard about Chandler’s annual BBQ and Beer Festival.
Tacos Tijuana Taqueria coming to Gilbert in late August
Tacos Tijuana Taqueria anticipates opening a location in late August at 51 S. McQueen Road, Gilbert. The restaurant serves street tacos on homemade tortillas.
Culver's under construction in Gilbert
Culver’s is opening its first Gilbert location at 3610 S. Val Vista Drive, Gilbert. Franchise owner Brian Farrel said he anticipates it will open in early December if it stays on schedule with construction. The restaurant chain is known for its frozen custard, butter burgers and cheese curds.
I Heart Mac & Cheese coming to Gilbert at location to be determined
I Heart Mac & Cheese announced Aug. 11 it will open three franchise locations in Arizona, including one in Gilbert. A site in the town has not been selected yet, according to the company, but it anticipates opening in spring 2021. The fast-casual restaurant specializes in build-your-own macaroni and cheese bowls and grilled cheese sandwiches.
Barro's Pizza relocates to SanTan Village Marketplace
Barros Pizza moved its location at 1431 E. Williams Field Road, Gilbert, to 2571 S. Market St., Gilbert, in the SanTan Village Marketplace on May 20. It assumed the lease of a Ruby Tuesday there. The family-owned pizza restaurant has more than 40 locations in the Valley and also serves wings, salads, sandwiches, pastas, gluten-free pizzas, dessert, beer and wine.
Flancer's restaurant celebrating 20 years in Gilbert
Flancer’s had its 20th anniversary in April at 610 N. Gilbert Road, Gilbert, but because of the pandemic, it has been celebrating the occasion during the summer. The restaurant serves, pizza, burgers and sandwiches on homemade bread in a decor featuring rock album covers on the walls.
Union Grill & Tap serves familiar bar food with an Arizona twist
Lee Malin may be from London, but he attests the American dream is alive and well.
Malin knows it first hand, having come to the U.S. as lead singer of a band, Score. After music did not work out, Malin worked up from a dishwasher in California to general manager of Union Grill & Tap in Gilbert.
Midnight Taco opens a brick-and-mortar restaurant in Gilbert
Midnight Taco opened a second location May 7 at 1395 E. Warner Road, Ste. 100, Gilbert. The Heritage District taco stand offers late night service, but this brick-and-mortar location opens at 11 a.m. Tuesday-Saturday and closes at 7 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday and 8 p.m. Friday-Saturday. It has carne asada, pollo asado or al pastor street tacos, burritos, quesadillas and nachos.
