UPDATE AT 1:45 p.m.
HISD officails released the following statement regarding its decision to remain open:
"We are following emergency management official’s recommendation to continue to shelter in place inside our schools. Our focus is the safety of our students and staff. Several HISD campuses experienced weather-related issues, but please be assured that we have taken measures to ensure the safety of our students. We are monitoring the weather and will provide updates as soon as we receive them."

Houston ISD is canceling events and after school activities Thursday, Sept. 19 as officials continue to monitor significant rain in the area.

The district had also canceled after-school activities Wednesday, Sept. 18 as a precaution. Evening classes at Liberty High School are canceled as well.

HISD's Middle College at Felix Fraga will release students early at 3:30 p.m. Transportation will be made available, according to a district news release.

A voter registration event scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Sept. 19 at Chávez High School was also canceled.

The Houston area remains under a flash flood warning until 9:15 p.m.
