The speed limits around the Grapevine parks are set to change.

On Aug. 6, Grapevine City Council approved setting a speed limit of 25 miles per hour for all parks at Grapevine Lake, which include Rockledge Park, Acorn Woods, McPherson Slough, Oak Grove Park, Meadowmere Park, Katie's Woods Park and Lakeview Park.

When the city had taken over the lease of the lake parks from the Army Corps of Engineers, speed limit signs with a variety of speed limits were already in place, city staff said. The city had received a few complaints about the speed limits in the lake parks, so staff conducted a speed study at Oak Grove Park.

The study revealed most drivers in Oak Grove drive at 23 mph, resulting in the 25 mph speed limit. Speed limits of 20 mph were considered, staff said, but decided against. This was because it is harder to enforce 20 mph limits on long stretches of roadways, such as those found in the lake parks.

The Vineyards Campground will be the exception to the uniform speed limits, according to meeting documents. A 15 mph speed limit will be posted on all lake park roadways within the Vineyards Campground, where the current posted speed limit is 17 mph.

In addition to setting the uniform speed limit, staff will also install raised pavement markers on all curves, add "Yield to Pedestrian" signs at trail crossings, install "Stop Ahead" signs near intersections that have limited visibility and trim any overgrown foliage where it impedes sign visibility, according to meeting documents.

The new speed limits were approved with only Mayor William D. Tate voting against. The mayor said nobody would follow the 25 mph speed limit.
