Former NASA Astronaut Greg Johnson and the International Space Station Team visited Trinity Episcopal School in the Westlake area March 9.

Trinity was selected by the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS) to host Johnson for a special presentation as part of the school’s week-long DesignFest 2018: Space Exploration Program.

Students ranging from Kindergarten through eighth grade - more than 500 total - attended the presentation and question-and-answer session with Johnson, featuring videos, photos and discussion topics such as what it is like to become an astronaut and the effects of space on the body, among others. Following his Trinity visit, Johnson presented to the students at Rodriguez Elementary School in south east Austin.

Johnson is currently the President and Executive Director of CASIS. Prior to CASIS, Johnson was a decorated fighter pilot, test pilot, and astronaut, according to a release. Retiring as an Air Force Colonel after nearly 25 years of service, Johnson was selected as a NASA Astronaut and ultimately piloted two Space Shuttle missions, spending 32 total days in orbit and contributing to the assembly of the International Space Station. Additionally, Johnson was the Associate Director of External Programs at the NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio. In that role, Johnson managed all public affairs, outreach, and educational programs at the center.
