Leander City Council and the Leander ISD board of trustees held a joint meeting Thursday to touch base on the school district’s upcoming bond election and learn about the growing student base.

Jimmy Disler, the chief facilities and operations officer for LISD, gave a presentation on district demographics to City Council and the board of trustees. According to the report, LISD is now the 10th fastest growing district in the state of Texas.

Disler said an additional 25,000 single-family houses will be built in the next 10 years within the district’s boundaries. Some of the regions topping the list of upcoming homes are the Travisso, Larkspur, Bryson, Mason Hills and Crystal Falls subdivisions.

LISD Superintendent Dan Troxell also gave a presentation on the district’s $454.4 million bond election on Nov. 7.

He told council member’s that LISD’s last bond was approved by voters in 2007. The price tag was $559 million, and the funds went toward building seven schools, purchasing land for nine schools and provided improvements around the district over the past decade.

Troxell said LISD has added 11,828 students since its last bond 10 years ago, and he said the district’s demographers are predicting the school district will add about 1,200 students per year for the next decade.

“We are growing at the rate of what is considered a mid-size [school] district in the state of Texas every four years,” he told council members.

Early voting starts today, Oct. 23, and runs through Nov. 3. Election Day is Nov. 7.

“Whether you’re voting for or against, you’re giving us a message of what needs to occur,” Troxell said. “Just vote.”
