The owners of Piranha Pools say they aim to be viciously efficient, which is why the business is named after the notorious Amazon River fish.

The Leander company services and repairs pools and also provides major remodels, new construction and consultations. Piranha Pools is owned by Bill and Rhonda Warren and is family-run, as they said their 11-year-old son, Morgan, often contributes his own ideas about branding and troubleshooting.

“He will hear us talking and put in his 2 cents,” Rhonda said. “And we’re like, ‘Hey ... that was a good idea.’”

Bill used to work as a maritime captain, but he said he grew tired of frequently being away from Rhonda and Morgan. He said in 2011 they decided to make a change.

“A pool has a lot of the same equipment that bigger boats have, so I was familiar with the concept of the equipment,” he said. “We talked to friends in the industry and then just jumped in head-first.”

Over the past six years, Piranha Pools has grown from a pool-cleaning business into a company offering construction and remodeling services. Its first build was a pool for an apartment complex in Lakeway. Bill and Rhonda said the fact that they eased into the construction side of the business sets them apart from other companies.

“We’ve seen and worked with the results of poor design,” Bill said. “So when we build pools, I explain every tradeoff to a customer—saving that extra thousand dollars in the beginning might cost you $10,000 over the life of the pool—little things like that. Ultimately, we want to deliver a better product.”

Piranha Pools services saltwater and chlorinated pools. The company has about 60 base customers whose pools it services regularly and keeps an additional employee busy all day fulfilling one-time requests.

Bill said every service call is different, which is what he said he likes about the business.

“I think that’s what keeps a lot of us interested. Even if it’s the same pool, it’s never the same pool twice. It’s going to change depending on the way it was used and the weather, so you’re always mentally stimulated.”
