1. Austinites plan watch parties for solar eclipse

While the full total eclipse won't be passing through Central Texas, residents will see a partial eclipse when the moon will cover the sun about 65-67 percent. Join these groups to catch a glimpse.

2. Hundreds of residents demand Austin adopt 100 percent renewable energy plan

People came out in hordes on Thursday to urge Austin City Council members to adopt a more aggressive renewable energy plan that would put Austin on track for 100 percent renewable energy by 2030. The Electric Utility Commission’s recommendation would place the city on a more vigorous pursuit than its current track, which has the city at 55 percent renewable energy by 2025.

3. Search begins for city temporary shelter for homeless

At the request of District 9 Council Member Kathie Tovo, Austin City Council passed a resolution Thursday tasking the city manager with identifying five city-owned properties that could potentially be used as short-term emergency shelters for the homeless.

Council members have recently called the homeless issue in Austin an emergency crisis. On Tuesday, more efforts aiming to curb homelessness and increase public safety downtown will begin. In addition, access to free community lunch and dinner won't be an option for some homeless individuals during this pilot program.

4. Catch the bats on Congress Avenue Bridge this weekend

Bat Fest returns this Saturday. Catch 1.5 million bats emerge from underneath the Congress Avenue Bridge at dusk while bands Smile Empty Soul, Adelitas Way, Trapt, Sick Puppies and Scott Stapp perform. Tickets cost $15, and the festival takes place from 4 p.m.-midnight.
