According to the Leander ISD 2016-17 district calendar, students have scheduled school holidays Feb. 6 and 7 for staff development days. Here are a few events happening this weekend and during those days off, and some events to go try.

  1. Go see an exhibit at the Texas Museum of Science and Technology.

  2. Go visit the Austin Steam Train Association Museum.

  3. Take pictures with the sculptures in the Cedar Park Sculpture Garden.

  4. Visit some local history at the Mason Homestead in Leander.

  5. Let your dog play while you have a drink at the Dog House & Drinkery Dog Park in Leander.

  6. Try your hand at rock-climbing or hit the rails at the BMX track at Elizabeth Milburn Park & Pool in Cedar Park.

Feb. 4
Family Storytime Puppet Show

Family Storytime at the Cedar Park Library is for all ages and lasts about 30 minutes. It has three stories, familiar songs, fingerplays, a short movie, and a craft with Miss Kit. The program begins at 10 a.m. www.cedarparktexas.gov

Feb. 5
Kids Chess Open Play

Learn the basics of how to play chess, or just meet up with other chess fans to play a few games. Kids of all ages and abilities welcome to the event at the Cedar Park Library. 1:30 p.m. www.cedarparktexas.gov

Feb. 5
Bluegrass Jam

The Leander Library welcomes the Central Texas Bluegrass Association for a monthly bluegrass event. The jam is open to musicians who plan an acoustic instrument, and listeners are welcome. www.leandertx.gov/library

Feb. 6
Minecraft Club

Laptops are available at the Leander Library for participants to use, though Minecraft is not installed. You can either play online under a pre-existing account or bring your own mobile device that has Minecraft downloaded. Parents of children under age 12 must remain in the library but do not need to attend the event. The program is recommended for patrons aged 7 and up. www.leandertx.gov/library

Feb. 7
Puppet Show

Storytime at the Cedar Park Library lasts about 20-25 minutes, and there will be a special storytime puppet show. Storytime is for parents and caregivers, and there are two times for children ages 15-36 months  (10:30 a.m.) and ages 3-5 years (11:15 a.m.).No registration is required for Library Storytimes. www.cedarpark.gov
