Here are four things Spring and Klein area residents should know this week.
  1. The Greater Houston area is preparing for the Super Bowl this coming weekend. Read about road closures and traffic patterns here, and learn about events happening around Houston this week in the final days leading up to the big game here.
  2. Groundhog Day is Feb. 2. According to legend, if it is cloudy, the groundhog will not see his shadow, and spring could come early, before the vernal equinox in mid-March. If it is sunny, the groundhog will see his shadow, and spring is delayed.
  3. Old West Melodrama will present “The Great Oil Scam of Sulphur Flats” beginning Friday, Feb. 3 and performances continue Friday and Saturday evenings through Saturday, Feb. 18. The show will be held at Puffabelly’s Depot Restaurant in Old Town Spring, 100 Main St., Spring, with dinner and a pre-show starting at 7 p.m. The melodrama begins at 8 p.m. $16-$19 (adult), $14 (senior and student). To purchase tickets or for more information, call 713-364-9190 or visit www.oldwestmelodrama.com.
  4. Harris County Judge Ed Emmett’s office announced last week that the Texas Historical Commission designated the Houston Astrodome as a state antiquities landmark, paving the way for legal protections with its new status. The designation means Harris County must consult with and receive permission from the Texas Historical Commission before pursuing significant alterations. THC has approved all of the renovations to date. Last fall, Harris County Commissioners Court approved a $105 million Astrodome renovation project. Read about it here:
