WHAT WE REPORTED Construction will continue through March in Southwest Austin to expand Google Fiber service, an effort that has been underway since last fall.

“We’ve been extremely gratified by the response we’ve received in Southwest Austin,” a Google Fiber spokesperson said.

Google Fiber first launched in the 78745 ZIP code in spring 2015, followed by expansion into areas including Oak Hill and Circle C Ranch.

THE LATEST In order to minimize disruption caused by construction, Google Fiber is utilizing “microtrenching,” which carves shallow grooves in the ground to deploy fiber.

WHAT'S NEXT Further expansion of the service in Southwest Austin is planned, but it most likely will not occur until after service installation in northern parts of Austin, according to Google Fiber. The company does plan to reopen Fiber signups to customers in Southwest Austin later this year.

“With the continuing growth of housing in the Southwest Austin area, we hope to continue to expand our service in the area,” the spokesperson said. “But we can’t build everywhere at once, and there is a lot of Austin north of Town Lake where we still need to expand as well.”
