The four-year fate of the District 10 Austin City Council seat will be decided on Tuesday, Dec. 13 as incumbent Council Member Sherri Gallo will face off against her challenger, Alison Alter, in a runoff election.

The polls on Tuesday are set to open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m.

Although Gallo beat Alter by a 12-point margin in the Nov. 8 general election, 48 percent to 36 percent, neither candidate was able to secure more than 50 percent of the popular vote, thus forcing a runoff election for the four-year term representing District 10 on the council. Early voting for the election, which took place between Dec. 1 and Dec. 9, drew a turnout of 17,269 voters, with 4,389 weighing in using mail-in ballots.

Of the 25 early voting locations, the top five in terms of turnout were:

  1. *Old Quarry Library, 7051 Village Center Drive: 3,174 votes

  2. *Randalls at Research and Braker, 10900 Research Blvd.: 2,355 votes

  3. Howson Branch Library, 2500 Exposition Blvd.: 2,167 votes

  4. Travis County Airport Boulevard, 5501 Airport Blvd.: 859 votes

  5. Randalls at S. MoPac and William Cannon Drive, 6660 S. MoPac: 707 votes

*Located within District 10

Per the result of an official coin toss on Nov. 16, Alter will be the first name on the ballot. According to Bryce Bencivengo, public information officer for Austin City Hall, the City Council will acknowledge the results of the runoff election on Thursday, Dec. 22. The inauguration of the five council election winners will be held Jan. 6.
