Here are 5 things to know this week if you live in The Woodlands area.

1. New retail and dining options are under construction in Hughes Landing, including Fleet Feet Sports, Focus Optical, Beauty Statement, L’Atelier de Beaute, Broken Barrel and Vom Fass Oils & Vinegars. The Woodlands Development Company announced last week that the new stores will open by the end of the year and early 2017. The latest storefront to open in the mixed-use development was Blo Blow Dry Bar in late September.

2. The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce will host a candidate forum open to the public at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Sam Houston State University-The Woodlands Center. The forum is for nine candidates running for positions 1, 2, 3 and 4 on The Woodlands Township board of directors. See Community Impact Newspaper’s Oct. 14 edition for a complete voter guide. Those who would like to attend are being asked to RSVP with the chamber.

3. The topic of the Montgomery County Animal Shelter is back on the Montgomery County Commissioners Court agenda for tomorrow’s 9:30 a.m. meeting. The court will consider taking action on a proposed 30-day plan for the shelter that was presented in court during a workshop last week. The court is also in search of a new director for the troubled shelter.

4. The Texas Renaissance Festival broke opening weekend enrollment numbers with more than 60,600 visitors between Oct. 8-9. Situated on 60 acres in Todd Mission, about 25 miles west of The Woodlands, there are seven more themed weekends planned this fall. Next weekend’s theme is “1001 Dreams.”

5. Halloween activities are beginning in The Woodlands this Saturday with the Haunting at Bear Branch. This year’s theme is Trail of Treachery: The Cursed Wood. Admission is $8 per person and the event is recommended for children age 9 or older. The park is at 5200 Research Forest Drive, The Woodlands.
