All CFISD campuses were equipped with new safety equipment at the start of the 2015-16 school year after the board of trustees approved a contract for card readers at all school facilities.

The new security measures were funded through the district’s 2014 bond authorization, which voters approved in May. About $55 million of the $1.2 billion bond has been set aside for security upgrades, said Roy Sprague, associate superintendent for facilities, construction and support services.

Plans are also underway to add security vestibules at all campuses as well as 10 additional cameras at each elementary school, 20 at each middle school and 40 at each high school, Sprague said. Installations have already been completed at some of the newer campuses, and officials are developing package plans to put them into older buildings where construction may take more time, he said.

“The cameras will substantially increase our coverage, which helps us if we have an incident with an intruder,” Sprague said. “The goal is to have all of this done by the end of the 2016 calendar year.”

Future improvements include the installation of emergency call boxes, new communications towers, lockdown panic buttons and bullet-resistant glass at all main entrances.
