District 4 candidates Gregorio "Greg" Casar and Laura Pressley garnered the most votes for the Austin City Council seat, and the two will face off in the Dec. 16 runoff election.
Casar maintained a steady lead on Election Day with about 38.6 percent of the vote, or 3,267 votes, according to the unofficial poll results released just after midnight. Pressley earned the second-most votes at 1,822 votes, or 21.6 percent.
Katrina Daniel received 1,366 votes, or 16.2 percent, and Sharon E. Mays earned 8.5 percent of the vote, or 720 votes. All results are unofficial until canvassed.
Casar said he felt very calm in the days leading up to the election and credits the hard work of his team to his lead in District 4.
"I feel very strongly we will have great chances in the runoff because we went door to door and spoke to thousands of people," he said.
Just in the past weekend, he said he and dozens of volunteers knocked on 2,500 doors.
Pressley said she also feels good about facing off against Casar instead of Daniel, whose values more align with hers. She said she expected to be one of the front-runners in the race.
"We wanted to win it straight out, and we were hoping that would happen," she said. "I think Greg is an opponent we're happy to have going into the runoff. There's a lot of distinctions between the two, which is good."

Early results indicate Gregorio "Greg" Casar and Laura Pressley are leading the pack of seven candidates running for the District 4 seat on Austin City Council.
Casar has earned the most early votes with 1,777 votes, or 38.6 percent. Pressley has earned the second-most votes with 1,060 votes, or 23.2 percent. Although seven candidates are vying for the District 4 seat, eight candidates appeared on the ballot. Marco Mancillas announced Oct. 28 he dropped out of the race to support Pressley.
Other candidates have earned the remaining votes:
- Katrina Daniel has received 769 votes, or 16.8 percent
- Sharon Mays has received 389 votes, or 8.5 percent
- Monica Guzmn has received 254 votes, or 5.6 percent
- Roberto Perez Jr. has received 191 votes, or 4.2 percent
- Louis C. Herrin III has received 100 votes, or 2.2 percent
- Marco Mancillas has received 34 votes, or 0.7 percent
A total of 144,519 voters, about 22.15 percent of 652,463 registered voters, cast their ballots Oct. 20–31 or voted by mail. More than 12,300 voters cast ballots in the District 4 race. All results are unofficial until canvassed.
The candidate who receives more than 50 percent of the votes will win the election. Otherwise the race will proceed to a Dec. 16 runoff election between the two leading candidates.
After the new City Council is established, five council members will be randomly selected to serve initial two-year terms, and five will serve initial four-year terms. The initial terms allow future council elections to be held every two years. Future council terms will last four years.
District 4 is the densest City Council district in Austin with about 79,000 residents living in about 12 square miles. Neighborhoods in District 4 include Heritage Hills, Highland, the North Austin Civic Association—bounded by US 183, Metric Boulevard, Kramer Lane and Lamar Boulevard—the North Lamar/Georgian Acres neighborhood, Ridgetop, Skyview, St. Johns, Windsor Hills and Windsor Park.
This election represents the first time voters will choose City Council members from 10 geographic districts, meaning voters can only vote for candidates from their district. The mayor will still be elected at-large, meaning anyone can vote for the mayor.
