On March 20, Austin City Council will review a resolution to support tax credits to the developer of a proposed affordable housing project, Cardinal Point, at 11108 and 11300 Zimmerman Lane, Austin.
The 170-unit complex is slated to be constructed on a side street off RR 620 and zoned to Leander ISD's Vandegrift High School, Canyon Ridge Middle School and Grandview Elementary School, Foundation Communities Executive Director Walter Moreau said. Foundation Communities is the developer for the proposed affordable rental site.
Moreau said the state is trying to build more affordable homes in all parts of Austin—including areas that traditionally have not had affordable housing—and encourage development in higher income areas with strong schools.
The Zimmerman Lane tract was selected for the Cardinal Point project because more than 500 retail and service jobs are located within a mile of the site, Moreau said. However, he said the area is lacking in bus service and mass transportation.
"[Zimmerman Lane] is not an ideal [location], but we hope we can work with Capital Metro to look at [adding] service [in the area]," Moreau said.
He said Foundation Communities will find out in July if the Cardinal Point proposal will be accepted by the state.
