Texans could do a lot more to live sustainably in Brad Craig's estimation.

The Australian transplant settled in Kyle about three years ago and could not believe how much catching up Central Texas has to do with regard to sustainable living.

"[Eco-friendly designs] are things that have been industry standard in Australia for 20 years plus, and here it's all a new buzzword," Craig said.

The Aussie went from being a fully licensed builder in his home country to taking a job at The Home Depot in Texas.

Craig said that helped him get his foot in the door and learn the construction standards in the United States. He has since left the home improvement store.

Green building is one of the emphases of his home design business, which he began in 2013.

Gutters to capture rainwater, metal roofing and solar passive design are incorporated into his designs.

Among his aims in 2014 are to further his design work and get back into building, which was part of his resume in Australia.
