Students at Hutto ISD's Ray Elementary School recently received a lesson in small business practices, while also contributing to a local charity.

On May 29, Ray Elementary hosted an economics fair for its third grade students, which helped raise $300 for the Hutto Food Bank.

"[The fair] is for our economics unit in social studies," Third Grade Teacher Wendy Ricke said. "Kids think of a product, build it at home and bring it to school. They must come up with a price and a way to advertise their product. We talk about small business if they made a profit and why or why not."

Booths were arranged in the cafeteria, and students showcased their products. Parents and consumers came to the fair to purchase the items, and the proceeds were then donated to the Hutto Food Pantry, which is run out of the Hutto Lutheran Church.

"Pastor Marcus Biggot and myself were presented the check at the third grade awards ceremony on June 4th" said Lynda Herrin, a volunteer at the Hutto Food Pantry. "The money will be used to buy food, toiletries, and paper goods for the 30 families that we help each week."
