As part of ongoing construction on I-440 in Nashville, the I-440 bridge over I-65 will close this weekend, Sept. 20-23 for a widening project, the Tennessee Department of Transportation announced Friday, Aug. 9.

“When this project was conceived, one of the things we wanted to do is to make sure we have three lanes throughout [I-440], which means the bridge over I-65 has to be widened,” said Will Reid, TDOT’s assistant chief engineer of operations.

Beginning 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, through 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 23, traffic near the I-440/I-65 interchange will be reduced to one lane and detoured away from the construction area. TDOT said drivers should be aware of the following detours in place:

  • I-440 eastbound traffic will be detoured to I-65 southbound.
  • I-440 westbound traffic will be detoured to I-65 northbound.
  • I-65 northbound traffic will be detoured to I-440 eastbound.
  • I-65 southbound traffic will be detoured to I-440 westbound.
  • Franklin Road will be closed from Berry Road to Woodmont Boulevard.

There will be a second weekend closure of the I-440 bridge over I-65 in spring 2020, Reid said.

Reid said it is unclear how much of a delay the closure will cause, so drivers are encouraged to avoid the intersection altogether if they can.

Prior to the bridge closure, crews began the second phase of overall construction on Monday, Aug. 12, as traffic is shifted between Murphy Road and Brightwood Avenue to the inside lanes to work on the corridor’s outside lanes, according to TDOT.

The $152.9 million reconstruction project, which is expected to be completed in late July 2020, involves crews working 24 hours a day, six to seven days a week to replace deteriorating concrete pavement with asphalt and upgrade the entire roadway to three lanes in each direction.
