Shea Freeman, owner of Freeman’s Flowers and Gifts, said she takes pride in providing the community with a space where customers feel taken care of.

“I didn’t go to any day care,” said Freeman, a Brentwood native. “I’ve been in the business since I was three months old.”

Freeman’s Flowers and Gifts is family-owned and has been in business for just over 51 years. In 2004, Freeman, the current owner, inherited the business from her grandmother, Betty, who had grown too old to take care of the business.

“[Betty] worked in the store until she was 95, and she passed away in 2019 at 97,” Freeman said. “I believe I inherited a good legacy from her.”

The shop sells flower arrangements for a wide variety of occasions, such as weddings, holidays, birthdays and funerals, according to Freeman. The shop also carries a number of small gifts, including stuffed animals, balloons, gourmet baskets and candy.

“I go the extra mile. I want the sender to be as satisfied as the recipient is,” Freeman said. “If someone is spending $50, I make it look like it’s definitely worth $50. If someone is spending $100, I make it look like it’s definitely worth $100.”

The store has been located in the Westhaven neighborhood for 11 years, since the family sold the original Main Street location, Freeman said.

“We decided Westhaven would be a good fit for us,” Freeman said. “We love it here.”

Keeping up with Franklin’s growth and creating strong relationships within the community has been a focus for Freeman since taking over the business, she said.

“I meet new people and make new friends every day, so being part of the growth of Franklin and Brentwood is a big deal to me,” Freeman said.

Freeman said the growth of Franklin and Brentwood brought more large competitors—noting that her quality of flowers and dedication to personalized customer service is what sets Freeman’s Flowers and Gifts apart from the competition.

“My grandma always taught me to advertise with our flowers,” she said. “It feels good to be trustworthy enough that my customers know they’re going to get quality work from my store.”

Some of her most popular bouquet arrangements are English garden-style bouquets that are filled with roses, peonies and other popular flowers, Freeman said. She said she often does larger arrangements for local churches and businesses as well.

Although the company’s website offers a number of specialty predesigned bouquets, customers are able to customize those arrangements, or they can let Freeman and her florists arrange a surprise bouquet with their “designer’s choice” options.

Freeman said she felt fulfilled when customers were happy with her work.

“I may not be rich doing this, but I get to make people happy, and that’s wealth,” she said.
