The city of Kyle and the Make-A-Wish Foundation, along with 11-year-old Ash Crane, broke ground Jan. 21 on the Ash Pavilion, which will eventually be home to a roller hockey rink that will double as an events center for the city. The pavilion will be located in Gregg-Clarke Park, 1231-1301 W. Center St., Kyle.

The hockey rink was inspired by Ash, who has a congenital heart defect called hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Over the past six months, the Make-A-Wish Foundation has partnered with the city and local residents to raise money for the project.

Along with a $250,000 contribution from the city's Park Development Fund, the money raised will pay for the first phase of the project: the foundations of the 200-foot by 100-foot pavilion that when complete will give Ash and other children the ability to play roller hockey right in downtown Kyle.

The project is about $80,000 from being fully funded; to donate, visit the city of Kyle's website; to pledge in-kind work, call the Kyle Parks Department at 512-262-3939.
