Fulshear City Council approved the city’s fiscal year 2018-19 budget and the 2019 property tax rate Tuesday night.

The approved budget comes in at about $10.6 million and the property tax rate was set at $0.16251 per $100 in property value.

“The budget provides funding for sustained operational growth and continued progress on capital improvement projects,” Chief Financial Officer Wes Vela said.

Vela said the property tax rate increase of $0.003819 per $100 valuation from the prior year’s rate of $0.158691 per $100 will increase revenue for the city by more than $347,000. This is an increase of more than 16 percent compared to the prior year’s budget, he said. New property added to the tax rolls will provide more than $190,000 to the budget in the coming year.

According to the Houston Association of Realtors, the median home value in Fulshear is $158,640. The tax rate increase will raise the resulting tax bill for a median-value home by about $5. Those outside of downtown Fulshear can expect to pay $3.82 more per $100,000 in home value.

City Council members expressed appreciation for Vela’s efforts to walk the mostly new council through the budgeting process. Mayor Aaron Groff and five of the seven city council members are in their first year of service on the City Council this year.

“I really appreciate the work that [Vela has] done in bringing us along in the process, considering we were pretty far behind with the deadline for getting this done,” Council Member Joel Patterson said.
