As the second week of the New Year begins, here's a few things to know in the Tomball and Magnolia area.

1. The Magnolia ISD board of trustees will hold a meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 9, at the Celeste Graves Education Support Center. Facilities Executive Director Tim Bruner will present on the district's bond projects, and Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum Anita Hebert will provide an update on the district's A-F accountability ratings from the Texas Education Agency. The board will also consider a resolution calling on the Texas Legislature to repeal and replace the A-F rating system with a community-based accountability system.

2. The Tomball ISD board of trustees will meet for a workshop at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 9, at the John P. Neubauer Administration Building to preview its regular meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 10. According to Tuesday's agenda, the board will consider the purchase of 20 school buses from Thomas Bus Gulf Coast for $1,846,252.

3. Magnolia City Council will meet at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 10, at Magnolia City Hall. The council will consider a variety of parcels for annexation into the city's extraterritorial jurisdiction and the creation of Municipal Utility District No. 154.

4. The Texas Legislature convenes Tuesday in Austin, and local legislators from the Tomball/Magnolia area have already filed numerous bills. State Rep. Cecil Bell Jr., R-Magnolia, filed a bill regarding property tax reform, which would limit appraisal value increases. State Sen. Brandon Creighton, R-Conroe, also co-authored Senate Bill 2 with Sen. Paul Bettencourt, R-Houston, which touches on almost all aspects of the state's property tax system.

5. State Rep. Cecil Bell Jr., R-Magnolia, will be sworn into office at noon on Tuesday, Jan. 10, ahead of the 85th Legislative Session. The ceremony will take place in the state Capitol, located at 1100 Congress Ave, Austin. Other state legislators from the Tomball/Magnolia area will also be sworn in on Tuesday. County officials in Harris and Montgomery counties were sworn in last week.
