Model trains whirr and clack inside the red caboose at the Tomball Historic Depot Plaza, showcasing nearly two years of work by local railway enthusiasts. Several volunteers began work on the Tomball and Walden Model Railway in June 2016 after a Lionel train collection was donated to the city.

The O-scale railway—1 inch representing 48 inches of a conventional train—opened during the German Christmas Market in December, welcoming more than 500 guests in one weekend, said David George, one of several volunteers building the railway. George said more features will be added to the railway in time for the German Heritage Festival in late March.

“There’s more to come,” he said. “It may not look exactly but it is going to smell and feel like Tomball.”
