Although The Woodlands has until 2057 to incorporate before it risks being annexed by the cities of Houston and Conroe, the township’s board of directors has begun taking steps to research the process.

There is no timeline for incorporation, but voters in The Woodlands will have the final say over whether to incorporate should the board of directors place the item on a future ballot.

The board of directors will hold a special planning meeting open to the public at 4 p.m. Wednesday at 2801 Technology Forest Blvd. to discuss the following items:

  • Specific responsibilities of an incorporated city government versus the township’s services and responsibilities

  • The types of analysis and studies that should be completed prior to voter consideration of incorporation

  • The development of an incorporation fact sheet to provide public information

  • The types of organizations or consulting firms that could be retained by the township to develop a comprehensive analysis regarding all aspects of incorporation

There will also be a public comment portion of the meeting, according to the agenda.

After the planning session, the board of directors will meet at 6 p.m. for its regular meeting. The board will consider the following items:

  • An update on the Recreation Center in the Village of Creekside Park, formerly known as the Creekside Park YMCA

  • A resolution regarding legislation affecting the Lone Star Groundwater Conservation District in the 85th Texas Legislative session

  • Proposed board chamber improvements

  • The creation of a Citizen Response Task Force
