The Fort Bend ISD Board of Trustees met Monday to review a proposed calendar for the 2018-19 school year, uses for $30,000 in award funding and an agreement with Houston-based construction company E Contractors to renovate and upgrade several FBISD schools.

2018-19 Calendar

The proposed calendar would allow the school year to begin Aug. 15 and finish classes May 24, allowing students a week for both Thanksgiving and spring break and two weeks for winter vacation.

It contains slight variations in testing, early release and teacher training days from the two options presented for public feedback in December.

FBISD staff received 4,800 responses from community members, including students, parents, teachers, principals, and other district employees, said Beth Martinez, chief of staff and strategic planning. This calendar presents no conflicts for extracurricular programs and meets requirements set by the Texas Education Agency, she said.

Award funding

The FBISD Board of Trustees was named the H-E-B Excellence in Education Board of the Year in May and received $30,000 as an award.

The board discussed investing the money in professional development for board members and leadership development training programs for students at the elementary, middle and high school levels.

Campus upgrades and renovations

As part of the 2014 bond program, the district plans to move forward with plans to upgrade facilities at David Crockett Middle School, Barbara Jordan Elementary School, Oakland Elementary School and Juan Seguin Elementary School.

The Board reviewed a possible $1.3 million contract with E Contractors to complete maintenance and repair work at these schools, including paint jobs, carpet installations, equipment upgrades and renovations of the secured front entrance areas, according to FBISD documents.

Juan Seguin also sustained serious flood damage from Hurricane Harvey, and as the staff works to restore the campus, the school will remain closed until fall 2018, said Amanda Bubela, FBISD’s director of external communications and media relations. The school recently received over $69,000 in donations from the Fort Bend Education Foundation and Region 5 of Fairfax County Public Schools in Northern Virginia.
