The Sugar Land 4B Corporation Board of Directors on Wednesday approved over $60,000 in matching grants that will help three community organizations pay for various capital improvement projects.

The bulk of the money, $52,537.50 was awarded to First Colony Community Association and will be used to install landscaping along Settlers Way Boulevard between Hwy. 6 and Lexington Boulevard, according to meeting documents. It will also pay for landscaping at various places along Austin Parkway.

In 2015 First Colony was awarded a grant of nearly $50,000 from the corporation to help pay for tree planting, according to meeting documents.

Another $5,879.57 was awarded to Chimneystone Planned Community Development to fund landscaping, lighting, tree trimming and other work on the intersection of Frontier Drive and Settlers Way Boulevard just south of Hwy. 6, according to meeting documents.

The smallest grant—$2,775—was awarded to Brazos Landing Homeowners Association to pay for work on the landscaping and irrigation system at the intersection of Monarch Drive and University Boulevard, according to meeting documents. Brazos Landing HOA received a prior grant also--$11,486.75, in 2016 to help pay for landscaping and a monument sign, according to meeting documents.

The grants awarded will cover half the cost of each project, according to those documents.

The two smaller-dollar funding decisions are final. The grant to First Colony will need approval from the Sugar Land City Council because the award amount is over $50,000. Jennifer May, executive director of business and governmental affairs, estimated the council would likely vote on the award in the coming months.

The corporation has about $138,800 left in its FY 2017 budget earmarked to assist with such capital improvement projects. Months earlier, $75,000 had been requested from the Cullinan Park Conservancy to fund improvements at Cullinan Park but the conservancy withdrew its application in February.

The corporation receives its money from a portion of the city’s sale tax revenue.
