The Klein ISD board of trustees on Monday night set a date for a hearing on its proposed fiscal year 2017-18 budget and tax rate. The meeting was the last one before the beginning of the new academic year, which starts Aug. 21.

The board also recognized Career and Technical Education students who won awards this year in national competitions, including awards in advocacy, early childhood education, biomedical debate, medical and computer fields.

Here are three takeaways from Monday night's meeting:

  1. The board approved a proposed tax rate of $1.43 per $100 assessed value. A public hearing on the tax rate will be held at 6 p.m. Aug. 28, and adoption will be held at a separate meeting immediately following the public hearing.

  2. The board welcomed new administrative personnel, including Mandy Land, principal of Doerre Intermediate School; and Kirsten Allman, executive director of special programs at the Teaching and Learning Center.

  3. Klein ISD received a $140,761 rebate from Bank of America for its participation in an interlocal agreement that allows the district to receive a rebate for some work-related employee purchases.

The next regular board meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sept. 11 at 7200 Spring Cypress Road, Spring.
