April is here, and it looks like some pleasant spring weather is ahead for Pearland and Friendswood, with a chance for rain on Monday. Here's what you need to know as you head into the first week of April.

City & county



  • The Friendswood City Council is expected to award the contract for Blackhawk Boulevard Phase 2 at its Monday night meeting. The council will also discuss the cost and the scope of the project. There are also two drainage and flood-related agenda items. The council meets at 4:30 p.m. at 910 S. Friendswood Drive.

  • Pearland's Planning and Zoning Commission meets at 6:30 p.m. Monday at City Hall, 3519 Liberty Drive, Pearland. The agenda includes a request from Houston Memorial Gardens Cemetery to zone about 30 acres of residential land for its own use.

  • FEMA is partnering with Houston-area home improvement stores to provide information on rebuilding and repairing flood-damaged homes. Specialists will be on hand at Pearland Lumber and Ace Hardware, 2027 N. Main St., Pearland, on Monday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Tuesday-Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

  • Thursday is the last day to register to vote in the May 5 local elections. Depending on where you live, this year's races include school board, city council and drainage district positions. Check with your county clerk's office on how to register.


Education



  • The Alvin ISD board of trustees is holding a workshop meeting at noon Wednesday. The meeting will be held at the Tommy King Administration Building, 301 E. House St., Alvin, in Room 327.

  • Pearland ISD is hosting its 6th annual Bridging the Gap Between Home and School Disabilities Fair. The fair will be held from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday at Dawson High School, 2050 Cullen Blvd., Pearland.


Community events



  • April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. The Pearland Police Department and the Exchange Club of Pearland will both put up 731 blue pinwheels to represent the number of confirmed cases of child abuse in Brazoria County. The Exchange Club of Pearland will host a dedication ceremony for the pinwheels at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the corner of Business Center Drive and the mall entry.
