Eighty of the Greater Houston area’s best high school football players will face off in the Bayou Bowl at Rhodes Stadium in Katy on June 11.

With proceeds from sponsorships and ticket sales, the game raises money for scholarships for students whose schools are members of the Greater Houston Football Coaches Association, the non-profit organization that sponsors the game.

“It’s a ball game and it’s an opportunity for kids to get one more chance to play,” Bayou Bowl co-director Jim Creech said.

Scholarships range from $1,500-2,500. Seventeen scholarships were awarded in 2015 and 16 were awarded in 2014, Creech said.

The June game will be the first time Katy has hosted the event. The game was played in Baytown and Sugar Land in past years.

The Bayou Bowl players are divided into an East team and West team. The GHFCA uses I-45 as well as classification from the University Interscholastic League to divide the teams.

Trey Herrmann, head football coach at Katy ISD’s Taylor High School, and his coaching staff will coach the West team. Drew Svoboda, Klein Collins High School head coach, will be in charge of the East team.

Creech expects 7,000-9,000 people to attend the game.

“Putting on a game like this, it’s something that the community wants to embrace,” he said.
