The Katy ISD board of trustees approved a recommendation to name the district’s second athletic stadium and field Feb. 27 following a process that involved extensive public input.

The board unanimously voted 7-0 to name the facility Legacy Stadium at the recommendation of the Second Stadium Naming Advisory Committee.

The committee was formed to identify a suitable name for the stadium that would align with the core values and beliefs of KISD, according to a press release.

The group sought and reviewed name nominations from the KISD community and presented its recommendation at the Feb. 21 work study meeting. Dozens of parents, staff and teachers attended the public forum to voice their input.

The board also approved the recommendation that the stadium field be named Mike Johnston Field after the former Katy High School football coach.

“It’s an honor to recognize all the former legacies which continue to inspire our students,” said KISD board president Rebecca Fox. “Coach Johnston is a perfect example of an individual who continues to pour out his love and dedication for the future generation.”

The multipurpose school facility is expected to open in fall 2017 and will be part of the Academy Sports+Outdoors Student Activities Complex.
